Welcome to the Soul Beat Network

Welcome to Soul Beat Network: Oakland's Pioneering African American Television Network

Founded in 1978 by the visionary Charles "Chuck" Johnson, Soul Beat Network emerged as California's first African American television network dedicated to serving the vibrant African American community of Oakland, CA. With 24-hour programming that included R&B, rap, gospel entertainment, lifestyle shows, religious services, local and national news, political discussions, relationship advice, and more, Soul Beat quickly became a cultural cornerstone.

Throughout its early years, Soul Beat Network was a launching pad for numerous artists, personalities, and comedians who would go on to achieve great success. Despite its closure in 2003, the legacy of Soul Beat endured in the hearts and memories of its dedicated audience.

In the digital age, Soul Beat Network has been revitalized by Charles "Chuck" Johnson (no relation to the original founder) and is committed to recapturing the magic of its original format. Recognizing that today's viewers often prefer streaming services over traditional television, Soul Beat Network has adapted to meet contemporary demands while striving to return to television.

Now, Soul Beat Network not only offers rich and diverse programming but also provides a comprehensive suite of multimedia and production services.

Soul Beat Network: Bridging the Gap Between Oakland's Government and Its Residents

At Soul Beat Network, our commitment to the community goes beyond broadcasting and multimedia services. As Oakland's original African American television network, we have always been deeply connected to the pulse of our community. Today, we proudly serve as the Cultural Strategist for Oakland's District Seven, working closely with the city’s Council Member Treva Reid, the City of Oakland's Mayor's office, and other elected officials, to foster a vibrant, inclusive, and thriving community.

Our commitment is rooted in the belief that Oakland has immense potential, and its people deserve every opportunity to thrive. By collaborating with government officials, we strive to amplify the voices of our community, advocating for policies and initiatives that prioritize residents' well-being and prosperity.

Our approach is centered on the community, ensuring that our advocacy reflects the true needs and aspirations of Oakland's residents. We believe in the power of collaboration, working hand in hand to leverage our resources and expertise for meaningful change. Our engagement is action-oriented, focused on delivering real outcomes that improve the quality of life in Oakland, from promoting cultural awareness to supporting local initiatives.

Together with our government partners, Soul Beat Network is dedicated to building a vibrant, inclusive, and thriving Oakland for all who call it home.
